Inspirations for Dynamic's debut CD, This is Dynamic. Dansk tekst nedenfor
by Paul Kim
This is Dynamic is our debut album. It was recorded in 2018, partly in Oakland, California, partly in Copenhagen, Denmark. The album will be available on cd and on streaming services from May 11, 2019.
Seven Steps to Heaven, originally an instrumental by Miles Davis was originally arranged by Moorea Dickason, a friend of Paul Kim and also co-leader of MoeTar, one of the top progressive rock bands of San Francisco. The arrangement is loosely based on Cassandra Wilson's vocal version of the tune and is with her lyrics.
Evidence, originally an instrumental by Thelonious Monk, is inspired by Madeline Eastman's latin-jazz version from her CD Art Attack. Madeline has long been one of the top jazz singers from San Francisco as well as a leading jazz educator. Paul's arrangement includes a shout chorus for which every note was actually played by Thelonious during one of his live performances of Evidence.
Words Do Me Wrong is written by Dynamic's drummer, Hasse Tang. It is actually a combination of two of his songs stitched together by Paul Kim to reflect the nervousness of someone who is awkwardly trying to meet their dream-companion. The middle section suggests a fantasy situation of being able to write like Cyrano de Bergerac.
Mr. Puffy is written by guitarist Avi Bortnick while he was gigging in San Francisco in the 1990's, and was included on an obscure compilation album of local artists from the now-defunct Up & Down Club. Paul's arrangement is close to the instrumental original version, capturing the popular contemporary jazz sound of San Francisco which mixes jazz, funk, rock, and later hip-hop.
Denine Monet wrote Like a Whistle for her now-husband, and Paul originally arranged it as a surprise for the composer's wedding. The introduction quotes a passage from an important song in Denine's life, Dave Brubeck's Strange Meadowlark.
Chameleon is one of Herbie Hancock's most enduring songs. In this arrangement, originally by Paul Stiller for one of the leading acappella jazz groups of the 1990's Vox One, the song grooves to 15 beats over 4 measures. Paul Stiller and the other members of Vox One are teachers at the legendary Berklee School of Music. In a twist, Dynamic adds instruments to an arrangement originally conceived a cappella.
The idea for Early Riser comes from hearing Dynamic's bassist Niels Wilhelm Knudsen playing his original instrumental composition at a jazz club in Copenhagen. Katrine Romhild was inspired to write words and turn the number into a vocal version, with Anne Rorbaek reworking some of the text into Danish. The opening quotes the most famous Danish choir song about morning, Niels W. Gade's Morgensang from Elverskud.
Consider Me Gone vocally harmonizes Sting's swinging original. For his landmark first solo album, Sting employed some of the jazz world's top players and earned several Grammy nominations in both Pop and Jazz categories. Dynamic's version extends some of the harmonies, partially inspired by Paul's admiration of Steely Dan.
Om This is Dynamic
This is Dynamic er gruppens debutalbum.
Words Do Me Wrong er komponeret af Dynamics trommeslager, Hasse Tang.
Consider Me Gone sætter vokalharmonier til Stings svingende original.
